Elstu varðveittu leikrit Norðurlanda voru af trúarlegum toga og voru væntanlega flutt úti eða í kirkjum. Á myndinni sést dómkirkjan í Lundi í Svíþjóð, hún er að stofni til frá 12. öld.

Fornleifar frá járnöld gefa til kynna að dýragrímur hafi verið notaðar við helgiathafnir á Norðurlöndum. Myndin sýnir mót fyrir hjálmplötur frá 6. eða 7. öld. Mótið fannst á eyjunnni Öland í Svíþjóð.
